Surgical weight-loss procedures: Gastric bypass
With obesity taking toll as a major problem of the people today, surgical method of weight loss is perhaps the least time taking process. Scientifically, it is called the Bariatric surgery and it includes the procedures like Roux-en-Y gastric bypass; LAGB(Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding); Vertical banded gastroplasty, etc.
These procedures are helpful in cutting down considerable amount of fat in obese and very obese people;the main reason behind this loss of weight being that, the intake of calories by the body is lowered by such surgeries.
Mainly, this decrease in calorie intake is because of two reasons:
The size of the stomach decreases post gastric bypass surgery,as a result it is unable to accommodate the extra food that one eats, which skips over the stomach and intestine,so only adequate amount enters, though that may mean loss of nutrients to some extent as well.
Both the methods are taken into account.
The patient needs to undergo an overall medical check-up by a trained physician
The post-surgery cautions include maintaining a proper lifestyle.

Given here is the step by step process of the surgery.
STEP 1 After anesthesizing the patient, the first step involves with making the stomach smaller. The stomach is first divided into two sections: a small upper and a larger bottom section. This is done by the use of staples similar to stitches.A pouch like structure is created is the upper section which will hold the food.
STEP 2 -- After the compartmentalization, part of the small intestine is connected to the pouch. Now,durins intake of food,it traverses the pouch to reach the newly made connection:i.e.,
the'Roux limb' bypassing the lower section which is largerAfter this, the base of the Roux limb is connected back with the rest of the small intestine via the bottom portion of the stomach.A shape similar to the alphabet Y is formed. This is called the Y-connection.
This 'y-connection' helps in the proper mixing of food with pancreatic and bile juices, thereby assisting absorbtion of vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals. What concern the surgeons most in such operations is the problem of poor absorbtrion,as this is done by leaving out a major portion of the small intestine.Gastric bypass surgery can also be done as open surgery, which involves surgically cutting open the abdomen.
Laparoscopic method can also be used. This involves placing a camera in the stomach. The advantage of this method is that it is of low risk and do not develop post-operation marks and hernias. This is because smaller cuts are made and the method is less invasive.
In this method, tiny openings are made in the abdominal section.Very thin surgical equipments, along with a camera called laparoscope are inserted through any of these cuts The operation is done by the surgeon monitoring through a lens and video.
Generally the pain after the operation can be healed by medicines and proper rest,as advised by the doctor. The post operation precautions requires the patient not to lift heavy weights, maintaining a proper diet control. This operation leaves no marks on the body. The patient is advised to be under medication for at last three months before and after the surgery.
Every patient wants to undergo the laparoscopic method. The best suitable method for you can determined by the doctor. Therefore iots best to consult a good doctor and follow his advice. It has been proved that there are no side-effects of the operation, therefore the candidates who have undergone this surgery have nothing to fear.
